The stay, which extends through May 1, 2011, follows a unanimous vote by Acting Chairwoman Nancy Nord and Commissioner Thomas Moore. The AMA Government Relations Department is currently examining the 25-page Stay of Enforcement document and will issue more details shortly. May 6, 2009, M-ATV Contract Expected in July....S. Army officials last week took another step toward equipping its forces with an armored vehicle and associated vetronics that is light and maneuverable enough for off-road use in Afghanistan, but is rugged enough to survive blasts from improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) in Warren, Mich., is awarding contracts to four armored vehicle manufacturers to provide test and evaluation versions of the MRAP All Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) -- a relatively small and maneuverable version of the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, otherwise known as MRAP. U.S. Department of Defense officials say the M-ATV, also know as MRAP-Light, will be light and nimble enough to operate in the rugged terrain of Afghanistan, where the full-size MRAP vehicle might not be able to do the job. The full-size MRAP was designed for Iraq where IED roadside bombs have been a continuing threat. The full-size MRAP vehicle primarily comes from armored vehicles manufacturers Navistar International Military Group in Warrenville, Ill.; Force Protection Inc. in Ladson, S.C.; and BAE Systems in Santa Clara, Calif. Other manufacturers of the full-size MRAP vehicle include General Dynamics Land Systems in Sterling Heights, Mich.; Oshkosh Corp. in Oshkosh, Wis.; and Protected Vehicles Inc. in Summerville, S.C. Army contracts for M-ATV prototype test vehicles are going to BAE Systems, Oshkosh Corp., Navistar International; and Force Dynamics LLC, a joint venture of Force Protection and General Dynamics Land Systems. U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) officials say they plan to award a winner-take-all contract to one of the vendors, the statement said. The DOD plans to buy 2,080 to 10,000 of the new M-ATVs. May 6, 2009, Duplicate ATV Legislation in New YorkGOUVERNEUR, NY - Republican State Sen. Joe Griffo said yesterday that Democratic State Sen. Darrel Aubertine plagiarized his bill. The bill in question, Senate Bill S2927, is a relatively minor bill but important to the North Country. It's simple premise is to increase the legal registration weight of an ATV from 1,000 lbs. to 1,500 lbs. May 6, 2009, World Record ATV Parade Being PlannedOn June 13, the All-Terrain Vehicle Association of Minnesota (ATVAM) will attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the world's longest ATV parade. Currently, Harlan County Ridge Runners in Kentucky holds the record with 1,138 ATVs in a parade. May 6, 2009, More Info About Youth ATVsThe government just lifted a lead law banning the sales of children's ATVs, but not all bikes are back on showroom floors. This new law was enforced just a few months ago it said that models made for children could no longer be sold because the lead levels are too high. This meant many local motorcycle stores had to pull the ATV's off their floors and lose sales, but just recently the Consumer protection safety commission lifted the ban. Still many of the manufacturers of these models are not letting retailers sell them. They say the lift is legally inadequate because it leaves the industry open to federal and state lawsuits. KNDU talked to Tri-Cities Cycle Supply and they're waiting for manufacturers to give them the okay. "It would be great, for everybody. It would be great for parents that can put their kids on the right size machine and of course the money that's been lost in machines sitting in a store room somewhere and losing value," said Heather Howell, Tri-Cities Cycle Supply. ATV manufacturers say they don't want models on floors because the law set by Congress says the lead levels are too high. The Specialty Vehicle Institute of America says the only permanent solution to lifting the ban on this law is for Congress to take action and amend the law.
